The author made countless journeys along the Camino Santiago over his lifetime his maps are the result of his desire to place in the hands of the pilgrim cartography of the entire route and its subsidiary routes.

The Way of St James

The maps in this book provide the most complete visual guide to the Camino. They are in a manageable format (in the form of a book) and give directions from St Jean Pied du Port in France via Roncevalles where most pilgrims commence their journey right up to Santiago. Also included are maps showing the route via the Somport pass into Spain. The book also provides a simple listing of refugios along the route and telephone numbers. This book of maps forms a detailed companion the two large-scale maps of Northern Spain listed in the book list.

The maps are based on the cartography created by Elias Valifla Sampedro (1929-1989), who was parish priest of 0 Cebreiro and Doctor of (of Law of the University of Salamanca Scholar and an expert on Compostelan studies, he was awarded the 'Antonia de Nebrija' Prize (1967) for his thesis 'Li (amino We Santiago, [studio historicojuridico' (Madrid 1971) and the 'JosC' Maria Cuadrado' Prize (1986) for the Catilogo de los archivos parroquiales de Ia didcesis de Lugo '(Lugo 1991).

In 1984 he began the marking of the Camino with yellow arrows from the French border to Santiago de Compostela. He dedicated his efforts to the revitalisation of the Jacobean routes and to the promotion of the Asociaciones de Amigos, activities which culminated in the first International Congress at Jaca (1987).

His posthumously published work TI (amino We Santiago, Gula del Peregrino a Compostela' has been translated into the principal European languages and available as The Pilgrim's Guide to the Camino de Santiago and is translated from the Spanish by Dennet .
